Studying Web Development at TAFE as a Newcomer to Australia: Personal Story
When I arrived in Australia from Ukraine in December 2022, everything changed. I had to restart my life in a new country, learn a new language, and build a new future. One of the first steps I took was choosing to study something I have always been passionate about - creating digital art through websites.
Why I Chose TAFE
I enrolled at North Metropolitan TAFE to study Certificate IV in Web Development (ICT40120). I chose TAFE because I wanted practical skills and hands-on experience. My goal was not just to learn how websites work, but to be able to create something beautiful and meaningful - like art, but in the digital world. TAFE offered exactly that: a structured learning path, excellent teachers, and real-world skills. I didn't want to just watch videos or follow tutorials - I wanted personal support and guidance as I entered a completely new industry.
What I have Learned So Far
During the course, I have explored many different areas of web development.
So far, I have learned:
- HTML and CSS
- JavaScript
- PHP and Python
- UX/UI design principles
- Cyber security basics
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- Hosting, databases, and more
It is a mix of creative and technical knowledge that helps you build websites from the ground up - and it is exactly what I was looking for.
Overcoming Language Barriers
When I started, English was still a challenge. I had completed Certificate III in English at TAFE, but when I moved on to Certificate IV in Web Development, I struggled with technical IT terms in English. Thankfully, the teachers were incredibly helpful and patient. They supported me with extra explanations and always made sure I understood everything before moving on. Thanks to their help, I was able to feel confident by the second semester and fully enjoy the course.
My Current Project
As part of my Certificate IV in Web Development at TAFE, I have been developing my own project - a professional website for a web development studio called From Code to Art. This project is deeply connected to my learning journey. Every update I made came from a new skill I learned in class - whether it was responsive layouts, accessibility features, or SEO optimization. It is a living portfolio that continues to grow with me.
Conclusion
I would definitely recommend TAFE to anyone who wants to learn web development - especially if you are new to Australia, or new to the tech industry. It is supportive, practical, and opens real opportunities. I am proud of how far I have come, and excited about whah is next.
